Biography of Marcus Lyon
Early Life and EducationMarcus Lyon is a British artist and photographer whose large-scale works are considered pieces of art in their own right. Born and raised in rural Britain, Marcus studied political science at the University of Leeds, leadership at Harvard Business School, and performance measurement at the Kennedy School of Government.
Career
Marcus Lyon's career began with his collaboration on the "Amnesty International" project in Latin America, which inspired him to explore the pressing issues related to globalization. In the early 90s, he founded the multidisciplinary art studio "Glassworks," which gained significant recognition and won multiple awards. As a portrait artist, Marcus has photographed numerous celebrities, including Queen Elizabeth II, Bill Nighy, and the last four British Prime Ministers. He has received several awards for his work, such as the "B&H Gold," the "Agfa Photographer of the Year," the "Prix Pictet," the "D&AD Silver," and five "AOP Awards."
Artistic Focus
Marcus Lyon has dedicated a significant part of his career to projects addressing disability-related issues, including adaptive sports and urban planning. In the early 2000s, he shifted his focus to mega-cities and migration flows, believing that these cities would shape the future of the world. His recent projects, such as "BRIC," "Exodus," and "Hinterland," explore the impact of urbanization and migration in our society. Currently, Marcus is working on the project "TIMEOUT," which examines the entertainment industry and the interaction between humans and nature in our modern world.
Public Engagement
Outside the art industry, Marcus Lyon is known for his involvement in non-profit organizations. He has collaborated with "Somerset House Trust" and "Leaders' Quest," and founded "Home-Start UK" and "The Consortium for Street Children." Additionally, Marcus is an official representative of "Photovoice" and the chairman of the "Syngenta Open" award.
Personal Life
Marcus Lyon resides alternately in central London and Brazil. He is married to his wife Bel and they have a son named Arthur and a daughter named Florence. Marcus has traveled extensively through the slums and ghettos of third-world countries, which exposed him to the challenges faced by homeless children and child labor. His admiration for people's ability to adapt and survive in such conditions has influenced his art and exploration of mass behavior. Marcus believes that creating visual and conceptual languages can help society better understand and address global challenges.
