Childhood and Education
Mareks Segliņš was born on July 4, 1970, in Aizpute, Latvia. He attended Aizpute High School from 1977 to 1988. In 1993, he graduated from the University of Latvia's Faculty of Law.

Early Career
In 1994, Segliņš worked as an investigator at the Liepāja City Prosecutor's Office. He also served as an administrative judge at the Liepāja City Court that same year. From 1994 to 1998, he was an assistant to a sworn attorney at the Pomerancis un Kreicis law firm, specializing in legal assistance to the board of the Liepāja Free Economic Zone and the local port.

Political Career
In 1998, Segliņš became a sworn attorney. From 1998 to 1999, he served as a member of parliament in the 7th Saeima and was a member of the Legal Commission and the Economic Commission. On July 16, 1999, he was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs.
Continued Political Involvement
From 2002 to 2006, Segliņš was a member of parliament in the 8th Saeima and served as the chairman of the Legal Commission. From April 2005 to November 2006, he was an advisor to Prime Minister A. Kalvītis on internal affairs.
In November 2006, he was elected to the 9th Saeima and became the chairman of the Legal Commission and the deputy chairman of the National Security Commission. On December 20, 2007, he became the Minister of Justice of Latvia.
