Vice President of Bulgaria (2012-Present)
Margarita Popova has served as Vice President of Bulgaria since January 2012. She was elected alongside presidential candidate Rosen Plevneliev in the October 2011 elections.
Minister of Justice (2009-2011)
Prior to her vice presidency, Popova held the position of Minister of Justice in the Boyko Borisov government from July 2009 to September 2011.
Early Life and Education
Popova earned a degree in Bulgarian Philology from Sofia University in 1980. In 1989, she completed a law degree at the same university.
Legal Career
In 1990, Popova was appointed as a prosecutor in Pirdop. She became District Prosecutor in Ruse in 1991 and later served as Head of the Administration and District Prosecutor in Sofia from 1996 to 2006.
Academia
Popova has also worked as a lecturer at the National Police Academy (2001-2004) and the National Institute of Justice (2005-2009).
Awards and Honors
In 2014, Popova was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit pro Merito Melitensi by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
