Early Life and Education

Margarita Robles was born into a family of lawyers and spent her childhood in Barcelona from the age of 12. She pursued a law degree from the University of Barcelona, laying the foundation for her future legal and political career.

Judicial Career

In 1981, Robles began her judicial career as a judge in Balaguer, followed by postings in San Feliu de Llobregat and Bilbao. At the young age of 34, she became the president of the Barcelona Provincial Court.

Political Affiliations

During her time in the judiciary, Robles maintained close ties to the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). In 1993, she was appointed Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, and from 1994 to 1996, she served as State Secretary for the Ministry of the Interior under Juan Alberto Belloch.

Member of the General Council of the Judiciary

From 2008 to 2013, Robles played a significant role as a member of the General Council of the Judiciary. She actively participated in the association "Judges for Democracy," advocating for democratic principles within the judicial system.

Parliamentary Elections and Party Leadership

In 2016, Robles was placed second on the PSOE's Madrid list for the parliamentary elections. She was among the 15 deputies who voted against Mariano Rajoy's candidacy for Prime Minister. Following the PSOE's party congress in 2017, she was elected press secretary for the Socialist parliamentary group in Congress.

Minister of Defense and Foreign Affairs

Robles was appointed Minister of Defense on June 6, 2018, under Pedro Sánchez's government. On November 30, 2019, she temporarily assumed the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs while retaining her position as Minister of Defense. She continued to hold the defense portfolio in Sánchez's second cabinet, which was formed on January 13, 2020.
