Biography of Donald Tsang
Donald Tsang, born on October 7, 1944, is a prominent figure in Hong Kong politics. He has been serving as the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since 2005. Tsang has had a long and distinguished career in public service, dedicating his life to the betterment of Hong Kong.
Early Career
Tsang began his career in the Hong Kong administration in 1967. He held various positions in the finance and trade sectors, gaining valuable experience and knowledge in these areas. In 1995, Tsang made history by becoming the first ethnic Chinese to be appointed as the Financial Secretary of Hong Kong, a position he continued to hold even after the sovereignty of Hong Kong was transferred to the People's Republic of China.
Chief Secretary
After the departure of Anson Chan, Tsang was appointed as the Chief Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. During his tenure, he demonstrated strong leadership and implemented effective economic policies, earning praise for his achievements. However, there were also calls for him to undertake more substantial democratic reforms.
Chief Executive
In 2007, Tsang stood in the first competitive election for the position of Chief Executive. He emerged victorious, defeating his sole opponent, Alan Leong, a candidate from the democratic opposition. Tsang received 649 out of 795 votes, securing his second and final term as the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. However, he is required to step down from this position in 2012.
