Humble BeginningsMargo Shumway was born on August 2, 1979, in Cincinnati, Oklahoma. As an athletic child, she excelled in multiple sports, but basketball was her passion. In high school, she never considered rowing as a potential career.
College Dreams and a Change of Heart
Upon entering college, Shumway hoped to join Ohio State University's basketball team. However, her skills and experience were insufficient. The rejection plunged her into depression.
The university's basketball coach, recognizing her despondency, suggested she try rowing. Initially uninterested, Shumway attended a few practices and discovered her true calling.
University Success
For two seasons, Shumway competed on the university's crew team, leading them to a Big 10 victory in 2002. That same year, the team placed fifth at the NCAA Championship. Shumway also earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts in 2002.
Olympic Aspirations
In 2002, Shumway transitioned to pair rowing, where she achieved notable success. In 2008, she was selected to the U.S. Olympic team, joining the likes of Sam Stitt, Daniel Walsh, Mary Whipple, and Ellen Tomek. She competed in Beijing, representing the United States in rowing.
Beyond Sports: A Musical Passion
Alongside her athletic pursuits, Shumway is an accomplished musician. She composes, writes lyrics, and plays the acoustic guitar. She has expressed that if not for rowing, she would pursue a career in music. Her favorite bands include Silverchair and AC/DC.
