Early Life
Maxim Aleksandrovich Opalev was born on April 4, 1979, in Volgograd, USSR.
Canoeing Career
Opalev is a renowned Russian canoeist, having won 11 World Championships, multiple European and Russian Championships, and two Olympic medals. He holds the record for the most canoeing World Championship titles among all active paddlers.
World Championship Success
Opalev dominated the 500m singles canoeing event, winning four consecutive World Championships from 1998 to 2002. He also won the 200m event in the Russian team's quartet in 2002 and 2005.
World Record
Opalev set the world record for the 500m canoeing event in 2002 in Szeged, Hungary, with a time of 1 min 45.614 sec.
Olympic Medals
At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Opalev posted the fastest time in the 500m canoeing preliminary round and took an early lead in the final. However, he eventually finished second behind German Andreas Dittmer and Spaniard David Cal.
Recognition
Opalev was named Russia's Best Athlete of the Year in 1999, and in 2008, he won the national Olympic trials to represent Russia in the 500m singles canoeing event at the Beijing Olympics.
