Saint Maria An Guo, Martyr of the Boxer Rebellion
During the Boxer Rebellion in China from 1899 to 1900, Christians faced severe persecution. On July 11, 1900, Maria An Guo was arrested along with her mother-in-law Anna An Xin and cousins Anna An Jiao and Maria An Linhua.
Faithful to Her Faith
The rebels demanded that the arrested women renounce their Christian faith. However, the women remained steadfast in their beliefs. As a result, they were taken outside the village and executed.
Beatification and Canonization
Maria An Guo was beatified on April 17, 1955, by Pope Pius XII. She was canonized as a saint on October 1, 2000, by Pope John Paul II, alongside a group of 120 Chinese martyrs.
