María Antonieta Alva Luperdi is a Peruvian economist and stateswoman who served as the Minister of Economy and Finance of Peru from October 3, 2019, to November 9, 2020.

Early Life and Education

Alva was born in Lima, Peru, to Jorge Elías Alva Hurtado, a civil engineer and current rector of the National University of Engineering, and María Antonieta Luperdi Brillo. She attended Colegio Villa María, a Catholic school in the Miraflores district of Lima.

She later enrolled at the Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, where she served as president of the student council. In 2008, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics. She went on to pursue a master's degree in public administration at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, which she attended as a Fulbright and Mary Joe Bane Fellow.

Ministry of Economy and Finance of Peru

After the dissolution of the Republican Congress by President Martín Vizcarra, Alva was appointed to the Council of Ministers by Vicente Zeballos on October 3, 2019.

Controversies

In February 2020, the chairman of the state-owned oil company Petroperú resigned after the release of an audio recording of a profanity-laced phone call in which he called Alva a "whore" for not approving $1.5 billion in financing. A few days later, a group of university students hung 18 banners over highway bridges in support of her stance.

Legacy

Alva's tenure as Minister of Economy and Finance was marked by her efforts to promote economic stability and growth in Peru. She also played a key role in the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
