Paul Ge Tingzhu: A Martyr of the Catholic Church

Early Life and Catholic Faith

Born in 1839 in Xiaotun Village, Hebei Province, Paul Ge Tingzhu was a devout Catholic and served as the elder of his local community.

Boxer Rebellion and Persecution

In 1899-1900, the Boxer Rebellion erupted in China, targeting Christians with violent persecution. On August 8, 1900, while working on his farm, Tingzhu was apprehended by a group of rebels.

Martyrdom and Refusal to Renounce Faith

Despite facing threats, Tingzhu refused to renounce his Christian beliefs. The rebels tied him to a tree and brutally cut out his heart with a knife, causing his martyrdom.

Beatification and Canonization

Tingzhu's unwavering faith and sacrifice were recognized by the Catholic Church. He was beatified by Pope Pius XII on April 17, 1955, and later canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000, as one of 120 Chinese martyrs.

Legacy and Feast Day

Today, Paul Ge Tingzhu is revered as a saint in the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on July 9. He serves as an inspiration for Catholics around the world, reminding them of the power of faith and the importance of standing firm in the face of adversity.
