Maria Cantwell: A Trailblazing Senator from Washington State
Early Life and Political BeginningsMaria Cantwell was born on October 14, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Washington School of Law in Seattle.
Cantwell's political career began in 1987, when she was elected to the Washington State House of Representatives. She served in the House until 1993, when she was elected to represent Washington's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. She served in the House until 1995, when she left to become the Vice President of Public Affairs for RealNetworks.
Senate Tenure
In 2000, Cantwell was elected to the United States Senate to represent Washington State. She is the second woman to serve as a Senator from Washington, after Patty Murray. Cantwell is a member of the Democratic Party.
Throughout her Senate career, Cantwell has served in various leadership roles. She was the Chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship from 2014 to 2015 and the Chair of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs from 2013 to 2014. Currently, Cantwell is the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
Legislative Accomplishments
Cantwell has been a strong advocate for issues related to energy, the environment, and economic development. She has been a cosponsor of legislation to promote clean energy and reduce carbon emissions, as well as bills to support small businesses and create jobs. Cantwell has also been a vocal critic of the Trump Administration's environmental policies.

Maria Cantwell is married to David Nierenberg, a former Microsoft executive. They reside in Mountlake Terrace, Washington.
