Biography of Maria Chebotaryova

Maria Chebotaryova was an Austrian opera singer of Moldovan descent. She was born in the capital of Bessarabian Governorate in 1910. In her childhood, she sang in the choir of the Kishinev Cathedral under the direction of M. Berezovsky.

Early Career

After studying at the Kishinev Conservatory, Chebotaryova joined the touring troupe of the Moscow Art Theatre in the city in 1929. Soon after, she married the actor Count Alexander Vyroubov, who was thirty years older than her, and together they left the stage.

Operatic Success

In 1929, Chebotaryova continued her studies in Berlin. In 1931, she made her debut in Dresden as Mimi in "La Boheme" and performed at the Salzburg Festival in Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice". She performed in Berlin and Dresden until 1943, when she became a member of the Vienna State Opera ensemble.

Later Years and Legacy

Chebotaryova's career was cut short by her untimely death from pancreatic cancer with liver metastases in 1949. However, she left a lasting impact in the world of opera. She had an extensive repertoire and achieved particular success in the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Strauss, Giuseppe Verdi, and Giacomo Puccini. Towards the end of her life, she began to explore more dramatic roles such as "Turandot" and "Salome".

Chebotaryova also appeared in several films and collaborated with renowned conductors such as Bruno Walter, Karl Böhm, and Clemens Krauss. She was buried in Vienna. Streets in Vienna, Dresden, and Kishinev have been named after her, commemorating the significant moments in her artistic biography.
