Biography of Maria Korda

Maria Korda was a silent film actress who was born on May 4, 1898, in the city of Deva, Hungary. During World War I, she performed on stage in Budapest and made her film debut in 1919. It was at this time that she also married Hungarian film director Alexander Korda. After the dissolution of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, the Korda couple emigrated to Austria and settled in Vienna. In the early 1920s, Maria became very popular in Austria. Her most significant films during that period were "Samson and Delilah" (1922) and "The Queen of Chains" (1924). Additionally, she participated in the Italian historical film "The Last Days of Pompeii" (1926). In 1926, Maria moved to Berlin with her husband, and a year later, they both relocated to Hollywood.

In America, Maria did not achieve great success, as she only appeared in one film directed by Alexander. The main obstacle to her Hollywood career was the advent of the sound era in cinema. Maria had a poor command of English and therefore had no chance of breaking into the American screens. Returning to Europe, the actress appeared in several British and German films before retiring from the industry in 1929.

In 1930, Maria divorced Alexander. She lived in New York for some time, attempted to write novels, and then moved to Switzerland. On February 2, 1975, Maria Korda passed away in Geneva at the age of seventy-seven.
