Saint Maria Giuliani: A Life of Faith and Martyrdom
Early Life and VocationMaria Giuliani was born on December 12, 1875, into a humble family in Italy. Despite her father's resistance to religion, Maria's mother fostered her daughter's faith in secret. In 1892, at the age of 17, Maria entered the novitiate of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
Mission to China
In 1898, Maria and six other Franciscan sisters volunteered to join the Catholic mission in China. The Boxer Rebellion, an anti-Christian uprising, erupted shortly after their arrival in 1899. Amidst the violence, Maria was apprehended and held captive.
Martyrdom and Legacy
On July 9, 1900, Maria Giuliani was executed in Shanxi province for her steadfast faith. Her martyrdom exemplified the courage and resilience of Christian missionaries in China. She was beatified in 1946 and canonized as a saint in 2000 by Pope John Paul II.
Remembrance and Veneration
Saint Maria Giuliani is remembered in the Catholic Church as a martyr for the faith. Her feast day is celebrated on July 9. Her story continues to inspire and strengthen the hearts of believers around the world.
