Biography of Maria Gorokhovskaya

Maria Gorokhovskaya, a Soviet gymnast, was born in Stroitel, Kharkov (Ukraine). She was an exceptional gymnast of the 1950s and became the first overall champion of the Olympic Games in 1952. Gorokhovskaya also won the team championship in 1952 and earned silver medals in vault (1952), parallel bars (1952), balance beam (1952), floor exercise (1952), and group floor exercise (1952).

In addition to her Olympic success, Gorokhovskaya was the world team champion in 1954 and won a silver medal in group floor exercise (1954) and a bronze medal in vault (1954). She was also an absolute champion of the USSR in 1951 and 1952. Gorokhovskaya won the USSR championship in parallel bars (1953), balance beam (1946), rings (1954), uneven bars (1949, 1950), and floor exercise (1948). She earned silver medals in all-around (1947, 1950, 1954), vault (1954), and rings (1949), as well as bronze medals in all-around (1949), vault (1950, 1951), balance beam (1949, 1950), and rings (1950).
