World's First Female Bishop

Early Life and Education

Maria Jepsen was born in 1945 in Bad Segeberg, Germany. After completing high school, she pursued studies in Evangelical theology and classical philology at the universities of Tübingen, Kiel, and Marburg.

Ordination and Parish Ministry

In 1970, Jepsen passed her first theological examination in Kiel and spent the following two years serving as a vicar (assistant pastor) in a parish. After her second examination, she was appointed pastor of a congregation in Meldorf, Schleswig-Holstein. Over the next 19 years, she served in various parish roles.

Ascension to the Episcopacy

In 1991, Jepsen became a senior pastor in Harburg. On April 4, 1992, she made history by becoming the world's first woman to be elected as a bishop. Her election marked a significant milestone in the recognition of women's leadership in the Lutheran Church.
