Biography of Maria Kuntsievich
Maria Kuntsievich was a prose writer, essayist, and translator of English, French, and Scandinavian literature. She was born in Samara and completed her studies in Romance literature at the University of Nancy. She also studied Polish philology at the humanities faculties of Jagiellonian and Warsaw universities. In addition to her literary pursuits, Kuntsievich was a student of opera at the Warsaw and Paris conservatories.
Debut and Works
As a writer, Kuntsievich made her debut in 1918 in the journal "Pro arte et studio." In 1927, she published a collection of short stories titled "Zavet s rebenkom" ("Covenant with a Child"). During 1939-1940, she lived in France, and from 1940-1955, she resided in the United Kingdom. Kuntsievich served as the chairperson of the Polish PEN Club. From 1963-1972, she lectured on Polish literature at the University of Chicago. In 1968, she returned to Poland.
Awards and Recognition
In 1936, Kuntsievich was honored with the Petrashek Award, and in 1974, she received the State Award of the 1st degree. Her contributions as a prose writer, essayist, and translator of English, French, and Scandinavian literature have cemented her place as a prominent figure in Polish literary circles.
