Maria Luís Albuquerque

Early Life and Education

Maria Luís Albuquerque was born in Portugal and pursued a degree in Economics from the private Lusiada University in Lisbon, graduating in 1991. She later went on to obtain a Master's degree in Financial Management and Monetary Policy from the Technical University of Lisbon in 1997.

Career in Public Service

Albuquerque began her career in public service as a clerk in the General Directorate of Finance from 1996 to 1999. She then worked at the Office of the Ministry of Economy and Economic Forecasts from 1999 to 2001. In 2001, she was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Treasury and Finance.

From 2007 to 2011, Albuquerque served as Director of the Financial Management Department of the Portuguese Railways Company. She also held a leadership position at the Agency for Public Debt Management.

Political Career

In the 2011 elections, Albuquerque was elected to the Assembly of the Republic on the Social Democratic Party list. In June 2011, she was appointed Secretary of State for Treasury and Finance. In October 2012, she was promoted to Secretary of State for the Treasury.

Minister of Finance

In July 2013, Albuquerque replaced Vítor Gaspar as Minister of Finance. She served in this position until 2015.
