Born on May 27, 1963, in Mosnang, Switzerland, Maria Walliser emerged as a multi-talented alpine skier, excelling in all disciplines except slalom.

Early Career and World Cup Triumphs

Walliser made her World Cup debut on December 3, 1980. In January 1983, she achieved her maiden World Cup victory in the downhill event. Throughout her career, she accumulated 25 World Cup victories: 14 in downhill, 6 in giant slalom, 3 in super-G, and 2 in combined. Walliser's dominance was evident in her two consecutive World Cup overall victories, securing the coveted Big Crystal Globe in the 1985/86 and 1986/87 seasons.

Olympic Medals and World Championships

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo, Walliser won silver in the downhill, missing out on gold by a mere 0.05 seconds to fellow Swiss skier Michela Figini. She also participated in the giant slalom but failed to finish the first run. The 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary brought Walliser two bronze medals in the giant slalom and combined events. She additionally finished fourth in the downhill and sixth in the super-G.

Walliser's impressive track record extended to four World Championships, where she amassed three gold and one bronze medals. At the 1987 World Championships, she claimed two gold and a bronze, adding another gold to her tally at the 1989 World Championships.
