Early Life and Education

Born and raised in New York City, Marian Goodman grew up in the Upper West Side and attended the Little Red School House in Manhattan. Her father, an accountant, collected art objects, particularly works by modernist artist Milton Avery. Goodman obtained her doctoral degree from Columbia University and stumbled into the art trade almost accidentally. After going through a divorce and needing to support herself and her two children, she organized a low-cost collection of reproductions featuring views of New York City in 1962 to raise funds for her children's school.

Founding 'Multiples'

In 1965, Marian Goodman, along with her partners, established "Multiples," an art publishing company that produced reproductions and books by American artists. Some notable artists featured by "Multiples" include Richard Artschwager, John Baldessari, Dan Graham, Sol Lewitt, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Smithson, and Andy Warhol. From 1968 to 1975, "Multiples" collaborated with European artists, introducing the works of Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, Blinky Palermo, and Gerhard Richter to American audiences. Unfortunately, Goodman was unable to provide Broodthaers with a viable market in New York City, which partially inspired her to consider opening her own gallery. However, the Belgian artist passed away before she could organize an exhibition of his works at the "Marian Goodman Gallery."

Expansion and Recognition

In 1995, Marian Goodman opened her first branch in Paris, and in 1999, the Paris gallery secured permanent exhibition spaces in the Marais district. In 2012, Goodman received an honorary degree from the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City. She once stated that she believes an art dealer should work with an artist for at least 15-20 years. Her gallery represents numerous leading international artists, including renowned figures in the contemporary art world such as William Kentridge, Thomas Struth, Thomas Schütte, Tony Cragg, Tacita Dean, Pierre Huyghe, and many others. According to Forbes magazine, Marian Goodman ranks 5th on the list of the most influential American art dealers. In 2010, she was ranked 22nd on the "ArtReview" magazine's annual list of the "100 most influential figures in the world of contemporary art." Friends and colleagues particularly admire Marian Goodman for her refined taste, social responsibility, and dedication to her artists.
