Early Career and Career in Brazil
Born in Campinas, Brazil, Mariano is a product of the Guarani football club. He began his professional career with Ipatininga in 2006, before moving to Tombense two years later. In 2007, he was loaned to Cruzeiro, where he made his debut in the Série A on June 3, 2007, against Palmeiras.
During his time at Cruzeiro, Mariano played 18 games and registered one assist for Maicosuel. In 2008, he returned to Ipatininga and was also loaned to Atlético Mineiro, where he played without scoring, but assisted four times during the league campaign.
Successful Stint with Fluminense
In 2009, Mariano joined Fluminense on loan. He made his debut on May 10, 2009, against São Paulo. In his very next appearance, he scored his first goal for the club, helping them defeat Santos. At the end of the season, he signed permanently with Fluminense and remained with the team until 2011.
With Fluminense, Mariano won the Brazilian Série A championship in 2010, playing 70 league games and scoring three goals during his tenure.
Establishing Himself in Europe
In 2012, Mariano joined French club Bordeaux. He made his debut in the Ligue 1 on January 14, 2012, against Valenciennes. On January 6, 2013, he scored his first goal for the club in a Coupe de France match against Châteauroux.
Sevilla and Galatasaray
After three and a half years with Bordeaux, Mariano moved to Sevilla in July 2015. He played in three seasons with the Spanish club, winning the UEFA Europa League in 2016.
In July 2017, Mariano was acquired by Galatasaray, where he continues to play today.
