Péter Szijjártó: Hungary's Foreign Policy Chief
Péter Szijjártó is a prominent Hungarian politician who has served as Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade since September 23, 2014.
Early Life and Education
Born into an affluent family, Szijjártó spent a period of his childhood in the United States. He completed his secondary education at the Czuczor Gergely Bencé Gimnázium in Győr. In 1997, he graduated from the Budapest University of Economic Sciences and Public Administration (now Corvinus University), where he studied international relations and sports management.
Political Career
Szijjártó's political journey began in 1998, when he was elected to the Municipal Assembly of Győr. He also co-founded and became the first chairman of Fidesz's youth organization in Győr. In 2001, he was appointed Vice-President of the national organization.
In 2010, Szijjártó was chosen as the personal representative of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a role he held until 2012. On September 23, 2014, he was named Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade
As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Szijjártó has pursued an independent foreign policy agenda that has often differed from the European Union's approach. He has maintained strong ties with Russia and criticized EU sanctions against the country. Szijjártó has also advocated for closer economic cooperation with China and other Asian countries.
Personal Life
Szijjártó is married with three children. He is an avid sports fan, particularly in basketball and soccer.
