Biography of Maria Bach
Maria Bach was an Austrian female composer born into a musical family. Her father, an attorney, was also involved in music and painting, while her mother was a singer and composer. Maria began studying music at the age of five with a private tutor, learning to play both the violin and piano simultaneously. She also played as the second violin in her father's home orchestra. After completing her education at a music school as a pianist, Maria attended the Vienna Academy of Music from 1919 to 1925. Her teachers at the academy included Josef Marx (composition), Paul de Könne (piano), and Ivan Butnikov (conducting).
Influence and Musical Style
Maria Bach's musical style was shaped by the influences of late romantics such as Mussorgsky, Scriabin, and Stravinsky. In 1921, she made her debut as a composer with the cycle "Narrenlieder" (Foolish Songs) for tenor and orchestra. During the 1920s and 1930s, she composed a piano quartet, piano quintet, sonata for cello and piano, as well as other chamber and vocal music.
Artistic Career and Marriage
In 1952, Maria Bach married Italian artist Arturo Chiacchelli and soon began to pursue painting, primarily landscapes. After gaining recognition as a painter through exhibitions, she achieved even greater acclaim than as a musician.
Death
Maria Bach passed away on February 26, 1978, due to poisoning from a household gas leak.
