Early Life and Education
Caplet was born in Le Havre, France, in 1878. He began studying music at an early age and excelled in playing the violin. In 1894, he enrolled at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire, where he honed his skills under the guidance of renowned teachers such as Jules Garcin and André Gedalge.
Orchestral and Teaching Career
After graduating from the Conservatoire, Caplet embarked on a successful career as a violinist. From 1896 to 1899, he served as first violinist in the renowned Orchestre Lamoureux, a leading orchestra in France. In 1899, he accepted a teaching position at the Bordeaux Conservatory, where he spent four years nurturing the musical talents of aspiring musicians.
Kapel Quartet and Composition
In 1904, Caplet co-founded the Kapel Quartet, one of the first permanent chamber ensembles in France. As the first violinist, he led the quartet to great acclaim for their exceptional interpretations of Beethoven's quartets. Caplet was also an accomplished composer, and his repertoire includes five string quartets, violin sonatas, etudes, and symphonic works.
