Early Life and Family
Mariela Castro Espín, born in 1962, is the daughter of former Cuban leader Raúl Castro and Vilma Espín. Her uncle, Fidel Castro, served as the country's President for over five decades. Castro identifies as a "rebel" within her family, having embraced progressive reforms during the 1980s.
Education and Career
Castro holds a doctorate in sexology and is the Director of the Cuban National Center for Sexual Education (CENESEX) in Havana. She is a Fellow of the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) and an ardent LGBTQ+ rights activist. In her role at CENESEX, Castro has led efforts to combat the HIV epidemic, develop comprehensive sexual education programs, and advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Rights
Under Castro's leadership, CENESEX submitted a bill to Cuba's National Assembly in 2008, advocating for the recognition of same-sex marriage and free gender reassignment surgeries with legal document changes. According to Castro, Cuban society and the government have become more accepting of homosexuality. She has stated that her father, Raúl Castro, supports these initiatives.
Publications and Recognition
Castro is a prolific author, having published 13 school articles and nine books. She also oversees the publication of the journal Sexología y Sociedad. Castro's work has been internationally recognized. She has been hailed as one of the most influential LGBTQ+ advocates in the world.
Personal Life
Castro is married to an Italian citizen and has two children with him. She also has a son from a previous marriage to a Chilean member of the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front.
