Early Life and Political Career
Marielle de Sarnez was born in Paris, France. She completed her undergraduate studies and began her political career as a secretary for Michel Poniatowski's Republican Independent movement. In 1978, she joined the Union for French Democracy, initially supporting Valéry Giscard d'Estaing's presidential campaign. She subsequently worked for National Education Minister François Bayrou, serving as his chief of staff from 1993 to 1997.
European Parliament and Paris Council
In 1999, de Sarnez was elected to the European Parliament, where she served consecutive terms until 2017. In 2001, she became a member of the Paris Council for the 14th arrondissement as a joint candidate of the UDF and FRS. She became president of the UDF's Paris branch in 2006.
In 2007, de Sarnez contested but lost the legislative elections for the French National Assembly. However, she was re-elected to the Paris Council in 2008 as part of Bayrou's Democratic Movement, and became head of its Paris branch. She resigned from the municipal council in 2010 to focus exclusively on her European Parliament duties, and served as deputy chairperson of the FRS under Bayrou.
Presidential Campaigns and Municipal Elections
In 2007, de Sarnez led Bayrou's presidential campaign and became a co-founder of the Democratic Movement. During the 2014 Paris municipal elections, she supported Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the victory of Anne Hidalgo.
Return to Paris Council and Ministerial Role
In 2014, de Sarnez was re-elected to the Paris Council for the 6th arrondissement. On May 17, 2017, she was appointed Minister of European Affairs under Minister for European and Foreign Affairs Michel Barnier in Philippe's government.
Investigations and Legislative Elections
In March 2017, the Paris prosecutor's office initiated an investigation into de Sarnez for alleged misuse of public funds related to the hiring of a parliamentary assistant. In June 2017, she was elected to the National Assembly for the 11th constituency of Paris.
Though initially planning to join Philippe's second government, de Sarnez and Bayrou declined to participate on June 21, 2017.
Personal Life
Marielle de Sarnez was divorced from Philippe Augier, the mayor of Deauville, and had two children. Her son, Augustin Augier, was included in En Marche! for the ninth district overseas constituency, which he later clarified was an error.
