Marigo Posio: Albanian Patriot and Activist

Early Life and Education

Marigo Posio was born on February 2, 1882, in Korça, Albania, to Papa Kosta Poço and Lenka Ballauri. Her sister, Urani, married Albanian politician and playwright Kristo Floqi, while her brothers, Niko and Kristo, emigrated to the United States. Marigo attended the First Albanian School in Korça.

Patriotic Activism

At a young age, Marigo married Jovan Posio. In 1904, they moved to Vlorë, where their home became a gathering place for Albanian patriots. Marigo was a member of the patriotic club Labëria, founded in 1908. She also played a key role in establishing an Albanian school in 1909.

Albania's Declaration of Independence

On November 28, 1912, Albania declared independence in Vlorë. Marigo Posio sewed the Albanian flag that was raised during the ceremony. She made several copies of the flag for government institutions using her own funds.

Women's Rights Advocacy

Marigo led the Albanian Women Organization, founded in 1914, which provided aid to wounded soldiers during the Greco-Albanian border conflicts. She also published a six-part book, "Shpresa shqiptare" ("Albanian Hope"), in 1921.

Legacy and Recognition

Despite her significant contributions, Marigo Posio's role in Albania's independence was largely forgotten until Kristo Floqi, her brother-in-law, brought it to light. She died on February 23, 1932, in Vlorë and was buried at Zvërnec Monastery. A school in Vlorë was named after her in honor of her legacy.
