Armeno-Soviet Revolutionary and Politician: Arshak Vramian (1872-1923)

Early Life and Education

Arshak Vramian, also known as "Armen Garo", was born in Erzurum (present-day Turkey) in 1872. He received his primary education at the Varjaran Sanasarian Academy and later studied at the Agricultural School of the University of Nancy in France.

Role in the Armenian National Liberation Movement

Vramian joined the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) in 1894. During the Zeitun uprising in 1895, he traveled to Egypt to organize aid for the Armenian self-defense efforts. It was at this time that he adopted the pseudonym "Armen Garo."

Ottoman Bank Seizure

In 1896, Vramian played a pivotal role in the ARF's daring raid on the Ottoman Bank in Istanbul. The goal of the operation was to attract international attention to the Armenian issue. Vramian helped organize the attack, which involved holding bank employees and visitors hostage. After the siege, Vramian negotiated with Russian diplomats for the release of the hostages and the safe passage of the ARF members.

Later Career

Following the Ottoman Bank incident, Vramian continued to work closely with the ARF. He studied natural sciences at the University of Geneva and became a doctor of physical and chemical sciences. He established a chemical laboratory in Tbilisi and later led the Armenian militia during the 1905-1906 unrest.

Involvement in the Turkish Parliament and World War I

After the Young Turk Revolution in 1908, Vramian was elected as a deputy to the Turkish Parliament. However, he quickly became disillusioned with the nationalistic policies of the regime. With the outbreak of World War I, he joined the Russian army and helped form Armenian volunteer units.

Armenian Genocide Retribution and Diplomacy

During the Armenian Genocide, Vramian played a key role in the "Nemesis Operation," which sought to track down and assassinate the perpetrators of the atrocities. In 1917, he traveled to the United States as a representative of the Armenian Catholicos and later became the ambassador of the Republic of Armenia.

Legacy

Arshak Vramian was a prominent figure in the Armenian national liberation movement. His bold actions and unwavering commitment to the Armenian cause earned him the status of a national hero.
