Biography of Maria Julia Mantilla
Maria Julia Mantilla is a Peruvian model and beauty pageant titleholder, who was crowned Miss World 2004. She became the second Peruvian to win this prestigious title. Born in Trujillo, Maria was the youngest of two daughters.
Education and Career
Initially, Mantilla studied to become a schoolteacher and planned to pursue a second degree in tourism. She dreamt of creating a network of tourism companies to promote her native country and hometown to the world. Trujillo is known for its unique blend of architectural styles, combining colonial and pre-Columbian influences, making it an interesting place for architecture enthusiasts.
Charitable Work
Maria is actively involved in charitable work and co-founded a program to support children from impoverished regions, along with several local women. Her dedication to philanthropy showcases her commitment to making a positive impact in her community.
Miss World Title
Mantilla earned the right to represent Peru in the Miss World competition after her successful performance in the national pageant. While the winner of the pageant, Liesel Holler, went on to compete for Miss Universe, Mantilla represented Peru in Miss World. On December 4, 2004, the grand finale of Miss World took place in Sanya, China, where Maria won the coveted crown, receiving it from the previous year's winner, Rosanna Davison of Ireland.
International Travels and Engagements
As Miss World, Mantilla traveled extensively around the world. She visited countries such as Indonesia, Russia, the United States, the Czech Republic, China, Tibet, and Ireland. Maria attended various events, speaking engagements, and presented awards to winners of local competitions.
Legacy and Sporting Achievements
On December 10, 2005, Maria passed on her crown to the new Miss World, Unnur Vilhjálmsdóttir of Iceland. Mantilla is not only known for her modeling and charitable work but also for her sporting achievements. In 2001, she became the champion of Peru in the heptathlon and pentathlon, earning her the title of the national "athlete of the year." Besides sports, Maria also has a passion for dance and excels in the popular local dance known as "The Marinersa."
