Maria Golubeva has made a significant mark on Latvian politics and academia as a prominent politician, political scientist, and historian.

Early Life and Education

Born in a small town in Latvia, Golubeva pursued her higher education with zeal, earning a Bachelor's degree in English Philology from the University of Latvia in 1994. Her passion for history led her to the Central European University in Budapest, where she obtained a Master's degree in 1995. Driven by her academic aspirations, she furthered her studies at the prestigious University of Cambridge, culminating in a PhD degree in 2000.

Professional and Academic Career

Golubeva's impressive academic background paved the way for a diverse professional career. As early as 1999, she commenced her teaching journey at the Latvian Academy of Culture, imparting knowledge in the field of cultural history. Her expertise extended to other universities, including Stradiņš University and Vidzeme University College, where she headed the research center.

Beyond academia, Golubeva served as a consultant for the State Chancellery and later at the Centre for State Policy and PROVIDUS. In 2013-2014, her analytical prowess was employed by ICF GHK in Brussels, specializing in European Union policy analysis. Since 2014, she has been a board member of SIA "RHC Consulting," providing consulting services to businesses and institutions.

Political Activism and Service

Golubeva's political journey commenced in 2017 when she joined the founding congress of the liberal-centrist political party "Movement For!" and was elected to its board. In 2019, she contested the European Parliament elections without securing a seat.

In a historic move, Golubeva was appointed as Latvia's Minister of the Interior in June 2021. This appointment marked a significant milestone for the LGBTQ+ community in Latvia, as Golubeva is an openly gay woman and the first female member of the Saeima to identify as such.

Personal Life

Maria Golubeva is happily married to Diana Ieleja, an education consultant. Their relationship began in 1990 when they met as university students and has stood the test of time ever since. They officially registered their marriage in Brussels in 2013, as same-sex marriage is not yet legal in Latvia.
