Early Life and Career
Born with a visual impairment, Yaryna Matlo is a Ukrainian swimmer who competes in the S11 disability class. She began her swimming career at the Kharkiv Regional Center for Physical Culture and Sports for the Disabled "Invasport."
Para-Swimming Success
2012 Paralympics:Matlo made her Paralympic Games debut at the 2012 Summer Paralympics.
2013 & 2015 World Championships:She won bronze medals in the 100m backstroke S11 at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships.
2016 Paralympics and European Championships
2016 Paralympics:At the 2016 Summer Paralympics, Matlo shared the bronze medal in the 50m freestyle S11 with Lisette Bruinsma of the Netherlands.
2016 European Championships:Matlo became the European Champion in the 100m backstroke S11 at the 2016 European Para Swimming Championships.
Continued Dominance
2018 European Championships:In 2018, Matlo broke the world record in the 50m freestyle S11 at the European Championships. She also won gold in that event and took silver in the 100m freestyle S11 and 200m individual medley SM11, along with bronze in the 100m backstroke S11.
2019 World Championships:Matlo continued her success at the 2019 World Championships, winning gold in the 50m freestyle S11, silver in the 100m freestyle S11 and 200m individual medley SM11, and bronze in the 100m backstroke S11.
Recognition and Honors
For her exceptional achievements at the 2016 Paralympics, Matlo was awarded the Order of Princess Olga, Third Class. She is a Master of Sports of Ukraine, International Class, and serves as an inspiration to Paralympic athletes around the world.
