Mario Gavranović: From Swiss Roots to Croatian Striker
Early Life and CareerMario Gavranović, a Swiss footballer of Bosnian descent, was born in Lugano, Switzerland, on November 24, 1989. His parents emigrated from Gradačac, Bosnia and Herzegovina, a year before his birth. Gavranović began his football journey in 1996 with Vezia, before moving to Lugano in 2006.
A Journey through Swiss Clubs
At Lugano, Gavranović made an impact, scoring 8 goals in 21 league appearances. He then moved to Yverdon in 2008, scoring 6 goals in 20 matches. In July 2009, he joined Neuchâtel Xamax on loan, where he netted 8 goals in 18 games.
A German Adventure
Gavranović's talent caught the attention of German side Schalke 04, who signed him on February 1, 2010. He played a crucial role in Schalke's run to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 in 2011/12, scoring a vital goal against Valencia. However, he struggled for regular playing time, and on August 31, 2011, he was loaned to Mainz 05 for a year.
Return to Switzerland and Croatian Success
After his loan spell, Schalke terminated Gavranović's contract by mutual consent on May 24, 2012. He subsequently returned to Zurich, where he made his debut on July 15, 2012, scoring a penalty against Luzern.
In January 2016, Gavranović moved to Croatian club Rijeka, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract. On January 5, 2018, he joined Dinamo Zagreb, where he has become a regular member of the squad.
International Career
Gavranović represented Switzerland at the U-17 and U-19 levels before making his senior debut in 2011. He helped Switzerland win the silver medal at the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Gavranović has scored 16 goals in 37 appearances for the Swiss national team.
Personal Life
Gavranović is fluent in four languages: Bosnian, Croatian, German, and Italian. He married Dijana Cvijetić in 2018.
