Early Career

Michael Oliver, a renowned English football referee, hails from Stoke-on-Trent. His officiating journey commenced in 1984 in local leagues across Staffordshire and the Midlands. Recognition followed in 1992, when he joined the Football League's assistant referees list, and in 1997, at the age of 34, he ascended to the ranks of referees officiating Football League matches.

Premier League Debut

Oliver's elevation to the English Premier League's officiating elite came in 2001. His maiden Premier League encounter pitted Fulham against Everton in December 2001. As the 2010/11 season marked Oliver's 11th year in the top flight of English football, his experience and expertise had become undeniable.

Significant Appointments

Beyond the Premier League, Oliver has also played pivotal roles in prestigious matches. Notably, he served as the fourth official in the 2006 FA Cup Final held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Furthermore, he oversaw the 2011 FA Community Shield contest between Manchester City and Manchester United.

Controversial Incidents

Oliver's career has not been without its share of controversy. In February 2007, he faced intense criticism from Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell and chairman Dave Whelan over his officiating in a Premier League fixture against Arsenal. Oliver's decision not to award a penalty to Wigan after Mathieu Flamini fouled Emile Heskey, coupled with his refusal to allow an injured Yosip Skoko to re-enter the pitch during an Arsenal attack, drew significant ire. Adding insult to injury, Flamini, who could have been sent off for the challenge on Heskey, received the ball in an offside position (missed by Oliver and the linesman) and crossed the ball, ultimately leading to an own goal for Wigan. Arsenal went on to secure a victory in the match.

League Cup Final

On February 28, 2010, Oliver officiated the League Cup Final between Aston Villa and Manchester United. Within the first five minutes, he awarded a penalty to Villa after Nemanja Vidic brought down Gabriel Agbonlahor. Some commentators felt that Vidic should have been shown a red card for the challenge. While Villa converted the penalty, United ultimately emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline.
