Early Life and Education

Franco Carraro, an acclaimed Italian statesman, politician, and Olympic figure, was born and raised in Italy. He graduated from the University of Rome, where he studied law. Pursuing his passion for communication, he underwent specialized training in public relations at the Alcide de Gasperi Institute of European Studies in Rome.

Carraro embarked on his academic journey as a professor of finance at the University of Rome from 1968 to 1973. He also served as a professor at the University of Rome's Special School of Human Psychology.

Additionally, Carraro held executive positions in the business world. He served as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Institute of Sports Credit from 1973-1998. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Telephone and Telecommunications Holding Company "STET" from 1976-1981.

Government Service and Political Career

Carraro's political career began in 2001 when he was elected to the Italian Parliament's Chamber of Deputies. He served in several parliamentary roles during his tenure, including as State Under-Secretary for Cultural Heritage in the second and third Berlusconi governments.

In 2008, Carraro became the President of the Chamber of Deputies' European Union Committee. Throughout his political career, he has been a fervent supporter of sports and culture.

Olympic Involvement

Carraro's involvement in the Olympic movement spans several decades. He served as General Secretary of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) from 1973-1993 and as General Secretary of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) from 1989-2001. He became President of CONI in 1993, a position he held until 1998.

Carraro played a pivotal role in leading Italian sports delegations to numerous Olympic Games and other international competitions. He was an Olympic Attaché in Mexico City in 1968, and served as the head of delegations at several Mediterranean Games and Olympic Winter and Summer Games.

From 2001-2006, Carraro was President of the EOC and Vice-President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC). He has also held various positions within ANOC, including member of the Executive Committee, Technical and Finance Commission, and Executive and International Committee of the Mediterranean Games.

International Recognition and Honors

Carraro's contributions to both sports and politics have been recognized internationally. He was made a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1994, and has served on numerous IOC commissions. In 2006, he became a member of the IOC Executive Committee.
