Franco Marini
Franco Marini, an Italian politician, has served as President of the Senate of Italy since 2006. He is a member of the center-left Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education
Born in Sant'Omero, Italy, Marini earned a law degree.Trade Union Activism
In 1950, Marini joined the Christian Democratic Party before later becoming President of the Italian Confederation of Labour Unions (CISL) in 1985.
Political Career
Marini was appointed Minister of Labour in Giulio Andreotti's government in 1991. He later served as the leader of the Italian People's Party following the dissolution of the Christian Democratic Party in 1997.
European Parliament
Marini was elected to the European Parliament in 1999, where he specialized in international policy and security issues until 2004.
President of the Italian Senate
In 2006, Marini was elected President of the Italian Senate after three attempts. He defeated former ally Giulio Andreotti in the election.
Government Crisis and Interim Prime Minister
In 2008, a government crisis led to the resignation of Prime Minister Romano Prodi. President Giorgio Napolitano appointed Marini as Prime Minister, tasking him with forming an interim government to reform the electoral system and prepare for new elections.
