Biography of Marion Ross

Marion Ross was born under the name Maryen on December 25, 1928, in Watertown, Minnesota, USA. She grew up in a town located 25 miles west of Minneapolis before moving to Willmar and settling in Albert Lea, Minnesota. At the age of 13, she changed her name to Marion, believing that it had a more distinguished sound.

Early Life and Education

Ross attended the MacPhail Center for the Arts and Southwest High School. Later, she moved to San Diego, California, where she graduated from Point Loma High School. During her time at San Diego City College, Marion earned the title of the outstanding student actress. After graduating in 1950, she performed at the La Jolla Playhouse in California, where she caught the attention of the theater director. Impressed by her performance, he recommended Marion to try her hand at acting in films.

Acting Career

Marion Ross made her film debut in 1953 with the comedy "Forever Female," starring Ginger Rogers and William Holden. She then went on to work in various films, including the biopic "The Glenn Miller Story," the Oscar-winning "Sabrina," the comedy-drama "Teacher's Pet," and the military comedy "Operation Petticoat." However, she became most famous for her role as Marion Cunningham in the long-running television series "Happy Days," which aired from 1974 to 1984.

After the success of "Happy Days," Marion Ross received critical acclaim for her performance in the drama series "Brooklyn Bridge" in the early 1990s. In 1996, she starred alongside Shirley MacLaine in the comedy-drama "Evening Star."

While Marion Ross performed on Broadway and in feature films, she preferred working in television. She is well-known for voicing the character of SpongeBob SquarePants' grandmother in the popular animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants." In 2007, she made a guest appearance in the TV series "Brothers & Sisters," playing the role of Ida, a mother who is not very fond of Nora and Saul. Ross currently resides in Los Angeles, California, with actor Paul Michael.

On June 7, 2008, the Albert Lea Civic Theater in Minnesota was renamed the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center in honor of her contributions to the arts.
