Football

Polish footballer Mariusz Lewandowski was renowned for his prowess as a defender and occasionally as a defensive midfielder. He made his mark in Ukrainian football, playing 64 matches and scoring six goals for the Polish national team.

Early Career

Lewandowski began his football journey with Zagłębie Lubin before joining Dyskobolia in 2000. In 2001, he signed with Shakhtar Donetsk, with whom he achieved great success, including winning the UEFA Cup, five Ukrainian Premier League titles, three Ukrainian Cups, and two Ukrainian Super Cups.

Shakhtar Donetsk

As a central defender for Shakhtar Donetsk, Lewandowski was a key player in their 2002 Ukrainian Premier League title victory and their subsequent cup victory. He also played a significant role in their 2004 and 2005 title wins.

In 2009, Lewandowski made history by playing in the UEFA Cup final against Werder Bremen, which Shakhtar won 2-1 after extra time. He became the fourth Polish player to lift the trophy.

Sevastopol

In 2010, Lewandowski joined the Ukrainian Premier League newcomers Sevastopol. Despite the team's relegation to the First League in 2011, Lewandowski remained with the club for three more seasons, helping them win promotion back to the Premier League.

International Career

Lewandowski made his international debut for Poland in 2002. He appeared in two UEFA European Championships (2008 and 2012) and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He retired from international football in 2013.

Style of Play

A right-footed player, Lewandowski's strengths lay in his ability to intercept the ball, his physical presence, and his ability to control the ball and initiate attacks. However, he was criticized for his slow pace and lack of agility.
