Maria Sagaidak: A Journey from Mathematics to Acting
ActressIn a historic moment for the "Soviet Screen" magazine, the portrait of Dr. Maria Sagaidak, a doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, appeared on its cover. Maria's first foray into film was the role of Amparo, a Spanish girl, in Emil Lotyanu's film "This Moment." Even during her audition, Maria captivated the tough members of the artistic council at the Moldova-Film studio. She played football on the beach with another debutant, Mircea Voinicescu-Sochki, and moved incredibly gracefully, laughed infectiously, seemingly oblivious to the camera. Many debutants are usually hindered by fear of the camera, but Maria behaved with the same bravery in front of the camera as she did in the eyes of strict examiners during her candidacy exams. At that time, she was a graduate student at the Kiev Institute of Mathematics and Cybernetics. She passed the audition for "This Moment" with honor. The role of Amparo was the lead in this film, and Maria had to speak only in Spanish and, of course, learn the basics of acting. Her mentor on set was Emil Lotyanu himself, who had previous experience working with a non-professional actress in the film "Red Meadows," where he discovered a young talent - Svetlana Toma.
A Rising Star
Maria became an actress in the truest sense of the word. From the first scenes of the film "Tram" and "Cafe," Maria portrayed Amparo softly and lyrically, achieving complete naturalness in her character's actions. Especially since her partner in these scenes was the wonderful actor Mihai Volontir. Mihai and Maria tried to convey the feelings of their characters mainly through expressive means, through subtle glances and gestures. The scenes turned out to be poetic, filled with lyrical moods. Maria's charm captivated the audience.
Recognition and Growth
Maria quickly gained popularity for her debut role. Director George Vode invited her to play the lead role of Viorika Vrabie, a teacher, in his film "Alone Before Love," which he was shooting based on a script by A. Busuyok. However, her participation in this film did not contribute much to her creative growth. The screenplay lacked drama and was ambiguous. Maria appeared in this film alongside her brother Mircea, Victor Sochki-Voinicescu. The two young teachers looked elegant and beautiful against the backdrop of equally beautiful landscapes, but where there is no real drama, actors usually have nothing to do but showcase their beautiful appearance.
Maria's other roles in the films "Reserve Officer" and "Leutary" can also be considered transitional in her creative biography. But this does not mean that the actress diminished her creative potential. She remained in excellent form, as evidenced by her role as Giannina in the film "Land, in Demand," where one of her partners was Moldovan actor Grigore Grigoriu.
Maria played for the first time at a "foreign" studio, with a different director, but according to Benjamin Dorman, the director of this film, she "acclimated" quickly to the new team. This was facilitated by the fact that she was partnered with such brilliant actors as Oleg Zhakov and Oleg Strizhenov.
Continued Success
One of Maria's notable roles was playing the Bulgarian folk dance ensemble leader, Ilieva, in the film "The Case at the Festival." She also appeared in the Chilean director Sebastian Lelio's film "Night Over Chile" at the Mosfilm studio. And then she returned to Moldova, this time for television, in Emil Lotyanu's film "Lucifer" alongside her first teacher.
Another small detail in Maria's biography was when her portrait as a doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, Dr. Maria Sagaidak, appeared on the cover of the "Soviet Screen" magazine for the first time in history.
Currently, Maria is hardly acting, focusing on the education of the next generation of mathematicians. However, she remains a creative personality - simply Maria - known and loved by millions.
