Davis began his professional journey in 1991 at the age of 19. He made his major tournament debut in 1992, reaching the last 16 of the UK Championship. In 1994, he made his maiden appearance in the World Championship and in 1995, he advanced to the last 16, which remains his best result in the tournament to date. That year, he also entered the top 64 in the world rankings.

Davis's first ranking quarterfinal came at the 1996 German Open. Despite facing the threat of relegation from the main tour in the early 2000s, he resurged in 2001, reaching the quarterfinals of the Scottish Open.
