Mark Esper: A Distinguished Defense Secretary
Early Life and EducationMark Esper is an American statesman who has served as the 27th United States Secretary of Defense since 2019. Born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Esper graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986. He later earned a master's degree from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1995 and a doctorate from The George Washington University in 2005.
Military Service
Esper served as an officer in the 101st Airborne Division and participated in the Persian Gulf War. He is fluent in German and Russian. After leaving active duty, he continued to serve in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve.
Political Career
Early Roles:Esper began his political career in 1996 as the Director of Research for the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation. He also worked as a staff member for the Senate Foreign Relations and Governmental Affairs Committees and as an aide to Senator Chuck Hagel.
Pentagon Official:
In 2002, Esper became Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Negotiations Policy, responsible for nuclear nonproliferation, arms control, and international security issues. From 2004 to 2007, he served as National Security Advisor to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist.
Defense Industry Executive:
After leaving government, Esper worked as Vice President for Europe and Eurasia at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and as Vice President for Government Relations at Raytheon.
Secretary of the Army:
In 2017, President Donald Trump nominated Esper as Secretary of the Army. He was confirmed by the Senate in November 2017 and took office the following month.
