Mark Grotjahn
Mark Grotjahn
Mark Grotjahn is an American artist known for his abstract paintings, although he also creates figurative works.
Early Career and Abstract Paintings
In January 2007, Grotjahn made a splash on the New York art scene with an exhibition of eleven dark blue canvases. The compositions, comprised of monochromatic, broad stripes, required close examination to reveal their intricacies. The series, titled "Untitled (Blue Painting Light to Dark)," 2006, features variations in tone that create a kaleidoscopic effect, evoking modernist abstraction and hard-edge painting.
This series was a continuation of Grotjahn's "Butterfly Paintings," which he began in 2001. These are geometric abstract compositions of wide stripes that converge at a central point (often two points in a single composition). The illusion of depth is created through the thickly layered paint and the tapering of the stripes.
Figurative Works
While Grotjahn is primarily known for his abstract paintings, he has also exhibited figurative works, such as "Untitled (Angry Flower, Guga the Architect 727)," 2008.
