Mark Regev: Israeli Diplomat, Government Advisor, and Public Servant
Early LifeMark Regev, born in Melbourne, Australia in 1960, grew up in Victoria. The son of German-Jewish parents, Martin and Freda Freiberg, he attended Mount Scopus Memorial College, a Jewish day school in Melbourne. Regev earned a bachelor's degree in politics and history from the University of Melbourne, a master's degree in political science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and an MBA from Boston University.
Political Activism and Zionist Movement
As a youth, Regev actively participated in the socialist-Zionist youth movement "Ichud Habonim" and the Jewish Students Society at the University of Melbourne. In 1982, he immigrated to Israel, where he worked on the Tel Katzir kibbutz. While in Israel, he Hebraized his surname from Freiberg to Regev. He served in the IDF's Nahal Brigade.
Diplomatic Career
Regev began his diplomatic career as a lecturer in international relations and strategy at the IDF's Staff College. In 1990, he joined the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Consulate General in Hong Kong and as a spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in Beijing.
Spokesperson Role
Regev gained international prominence and recognition as the Israeli spokesman during the 2006 Lebanon War, the 2008-2009 Gaza War, Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012, the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, and Operations Protective Edge and Guardian of the Walls in 2021. He effectively presented Israel's position in interviews with English-language television and radio networks.
Interfaith Activities and Other Engagements
As ambassador to the UK from 2016 to 2020, Regev focused on interfaith engagement. He hosted an Iftar dinner at his residence for members of the UK Muslim leadership. Regev is also the chairman of the Abba Eban Institute for Diplomacy and International Relations at Reichman University.
