Biography of Mark Weisbrot
Mark Weisbrot is an American economist and commentator who is the president of the non-governmental organization 'Just Foreign Policy', which focuses on reforming US foreign policy. Alongside Dean Baker, he is also one of the directors of the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) in Washington, D.C. He has contributed to publications such as the 'New York Times', the British newspaper 'Guardian', and Brazil's largest newspaper 'Folha de S. Paulo'.
Work on Economic and Political Issues
As an economist, Weisbrot has been against the privatization of the United States Social Security System and has been critical of globalization and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He has supported the efforts of South American governments in creating the Bank of the South, which aims to be less dependent on the IMF. His work on countries in Latin America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Venezuela, has gained national and international attention. In 2008, the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Celso Amorim, referred to Weisbrot's work. He has also been recognized for his research on the economic crisis in Latvia in 2010.

Weisbrot earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan. In 1999, he co-founded the Center for Economic and Policy Research, an organization that "initiates democratic discussions on the most important economic and social issues affecting people's lives." He co-authored the book 'Social Security: The Phony Crisis' with Dean Baker, arguing that a significant portion of the debates on the US Social Security System is based on the incorrect assumption that privatization will improve the system.
Views on Globalization and International Issues
Weisbrot believes that globalization, as understood by the US government and American financial institutions, has failed to fulfill its promise of enriching poorer countries. He has criticized the role of the IMF and actively participated in the development of the Bank of the South, a joint project of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Venezuela under the leadership of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. Weisbrot has served as a consultant to the governments of these countries and has been referred to as an "innovative intellectual" and "intellectual architect" within the context of the bank project.
