Marco Asmer: Estonian Racing Prodigy

Early Life and Karting

Born into a family of accomplished race car drivers, Marco Asmer's passion for motorsport was ignited at an early age. His father, Toivo Asmer, was a former race car driver and served as the Estonian Minister of Regional Affairs from 1999 to 2003.

Formula Ford and Formula Renault

Asmer's racing debut came in the British Formula Ford JLR Championship. He emerged as a formidable competitor, securing six victories and a runner-up finish at the Formula Ford Festival. In 2003, he briefly campaigned in the Formula Renault V6 Eurocup before transitioning to Formula 3 in the United Kingdom and Japan.

Formula 3 Championship Triumph

Asmer made his mark in the British Formula 3 Series in 2004 with HiTech Racing. After spending a season in Japan in 2006, he returned to the British series in 2007 and dominated from the outset. Asmer clinched the championship title three races before the season finale at Croft, becoming the first Estonian to secure a British Formula 3 Championship victory.

Japanese Formula 3

Despite his limited appearances, Asmer made a significant impact in the Japanese Formula 3 Championship. Racing for Three Bond Racing in 2006 and 2007, he showcased his talent and achieved notable results.

Formula One Test

In a historic moment for Estonian motorsport, Asmer became the first Estonian to test a Formula One car in 2003. He took to the track for Williams BMW, demonstrating his exceptional driving abilities.

GP2 and BMW Sauber

In 2008, Asmer joined BMW Sauber as their second test driver behind Christian Klien. He also competed in seven of the ten rounds of the GP2 Series with FMS International.
