Early Life and Education
Born into a German-speaking Swiss family, Peter Stamm spent his formative years in Schaffhausen, a canton in the northern part of Switzerland. In 1948, his family relocated to Thayngen, where Stamm's early passion for literature began.

After graduating from high school, Stamm pursued higher education at the University of Zurich. His studies spanned across the fields of German literature, philosophy, and psychology. Following his graduation, Stamm embarked on a career in education, serving as a senior lecturer and head of the curriculum at a gymnasium in Schaffhausen.
