Biography of Marsha Canham
Marsha Canham, a Canadian author, belongs to the older generation of writers in the genre of historical romance. She has authored over twenty novels, including three highly popular historical trilogies that have been well-received by critics at leading literary reviews such as 'Publisher's Weekly' and 'Booklist'. Canham has also been awarded prestigious prizes from magazines like 'Romantic Times' and 'Affaire de Coeur'.
Early Life and Family
Marsha Canham (nee Janoszewski) was born on November 19, 1951, in Toronto. Her father, a military refugee from Poland, served as a police officer, while her mother was a homemaker. Her older sister, Carolina, is now known as prominent Canadian politician Caroline Parrish, although she had aspirations of becoming a writer in her youth. Initially, Marsha did not strive for a literary or any other career. She got married, had a son, and dedicated herself to her family. The opportunity for her first literary endeavors arose when her child grew older.
Writing Career
Canham published her debut novel, 'China Rose,' in 1982. The intriguing and somewhat gothic love story of the protagonist's affair with a charming adventurer, the younger brother of her wealthy betrothed, a tale entwined with passion, jealousy, and revenge, captivated the hearts of readers. This made Canham realize that she had found her calling. She spent two years working on her next book, 'Bound by the Heart,' which was a so-called "bodice-ripper" romance containing explicit scenes, including rape. However, Canham later revised the content of this book and made a statement that any uncorrected versions, which still circulate on digital platforms, would be subject to legal action.
Canham considers Scottish medieval times, the era of Robin Hood, and pirates as her favorite historical periods. She chose these backgrounds for three series of her novels: 'Scotland Series,' 'Robin Hood,' and 'Dante Pirates.' The first book of the 'Scotland Series,' 'The Pride of Lions,' was first published in 1988 and won the 'Romantic Times' award. It continues to be a bestseller and one of the author's most beloved novels.
Current Life and Accomplishments
Unfortunately, only seven of Marsha Canham's novels have been published in Russian, and only two of her popular series ('Scotland' and 'Pirates') are available, albeit not in their entirety. The highest-rated book among readers is 'Midnight Honor,' which is the third and currently the last book in the 'Scotland' trilogy. The adventure romance 'Pale Moon Rider' and the second book in the 'Dante Pirates' series, 'The Iron Rose,' also received high praise.
Currently, Marsha Canham resides in her hometown of Toronto with her husband. She enjoys spending time with her son, daughter-in-law, and three adorable grandchildren, as well as walking her dog. She dislikes winter cold and prefers to spend that time in Orlando, Florida. Canham is an avid user of various social media platforms, where she actively engages with readers and friends, announces her books, and showcases her own hand-drawn sketches of the original cover designs. She often creates covers for her fellow authors' works and also designs custom badges for websites.
