Early Life and Education

Born on April 15, 1951, in Baltimore, Maryland, the future astronaut attended Nether Providence High School in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. She graduated in 1969 and went on to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado, completing her studies in 1973.

Career at NASA

1974-1980: Johnson Space Center

Following graduation, she worked as an engineer at NASA's Johnson Space Center from 1974 to 1980.

1980-1984: Gulfstream-1 Support

In 1980, she transitioned to NASA's Gulfstream-1 support group.
1984-1985: Astronaut Candidate Training

In 1984, she was selected to join NASA's astronaut corps and underwent general space training at the Johnson Space Center from 1984 to 1985.

Space Shuttle Missions

STS-32 (1990)

Her first spaceflight was on STS-32, where she served as a mission specialist aboard the Columbia spacecraft from January 9 to 20, 1990. The mission focused on studying natural resources.

STS-46 (1992)

On STS-46, which flew from July 31 to August 8, 1992, she returned to space aboard the Atlantis spacecraft. As a mission specialist, she participated in scientific research experiments.

STS-62 (1994)

STS-62 took her to space for a third time from March 4 to 18, 1994. Again serving as a mission specialist on the Columbia spacecraft, she conducted experiments on microgravity.

STS-81 (1997)

Her fourth mission was STS-81, where she flew aboard the Atlantis spacecraft from January 12 to 22, 1997. As a mission specialist, she continued to study microgravity.

STS-98 (2001)

On STS-98, which flew from February 7 to 18, 2001, she made her fifth and final spaceflight. Serving as a mission specialist on the Atlantis spacecraft, she contributed to the construction of the International Space Station.

Awards and Recognition

Throughout her career, she received NASA Space Flight Medals for each of her five missions.

Personal Life

She is divorced and has no children. In her free time, she enjoys aviation sports.
