Early Life and Education
Marta Lempart was born in 1979 in Lwówek Śląski, Poland. She pursued a degree in law.
Political Involvement
Lempart served in a minor role at the Polish Ministry of Labour and Social Policy under the Civic Platform government, where she advocated for improved rights for people with disabilities. She subsequently moved into real estate development.
In 2015, following the rise to power of the conservative Law and Justice party, Lempart became involved with the Committee for the Defense of Democracy, a pro-European NGO.
Activism
Lempart is a vocal advocate for feminism and secularism.All-Poland Women's Strike
In 2016, she co-founded the All-Poland Women's Strike (Strajk Kobiet), a social movement supporting women's rights, amid preparations for the Black Protests. The group's goals include increased access to abortion, strengthened rights for women and LGBTQ+ individuals, separation of church and state, and improved healthcare.
Electoral Campaigns
Lempart ran for local government in Wrocław in 2018 but failed to secure a seat. She also unsuccessfully ran for the European Parliament the following year.
Legal Issues
Lempart has been arrested on multiple occasions throughout her activism and has faced dozens of criminal charges. In February 2021, the Polish government charged Lempart with criminal offenses related to her role in the women's protests and her criticism of the Catholic Church. She has described this as a form of political pressure against her movement. She has also faced death threats, forcing her to go into hiding.
Personal Life
Lempart is an open lesbian. Her partner, Natalia Panasewicz, is also involved in feminist activism.
