Early Life and Education
Martha Ingram was born on August 20, 1935, in Charleston, South Carolina, to John Minott and Martha Elizabeth Robinson. She had an older sister and a younger brother. Martha attended Ashley Hall School in Charleston and later enrolled at Vassar College, where she earned a prestigious bachelor's degree in history in 1957.
Career and Family Life
After college, Martha began working at her father's television company, WCSC-AM/FM and WCSC-TV. During this time, she wasn't sure about her future career path, but her father suggested that she undergo her own training to continue his business in the future. For a year and a half, Martha studied the necessary subjects and learned about her father's business. However, she had to leave her job soon after to marry Bronson Ingram, a Princeton University graduate who served as the chairman and CEO of Ingram Industries, the largest conglomerate in Nashville, Tennessee. During this period, Martha was better known in the world of arts than in the business sphere. Aside from her maternal responsibilities, as the couple had four children, Martha was involved in the creation of the unique Tennessee Performing Arts Center.
When the Tennessee Performing Arts Center was almost established, Martha's husband invited her to work at Ingram Industries. In 1979, she became the vice president of public relations and later, in 1981, a member of the board of directors. During this time, Martha and her husband worked in adjacent offices. Bronson often sought her advice and kept her informed about all the company's events. He knew that she would eventually succeed him. Five days after her husband's death in 1995, Martha became the chairman of Ingram Industries and has since been considered one of the most hardworking businesswomen.
