Marta Vasconcellos: From Miss Brazil to Miss Universe 1968

Marta Vasconcellos, a former Miss Brazil, made history in 1968 when she became Miss Universe, making her the second Brazilian to win the prestigious title after Yeda Maria Vargas. She also became the fifth Latina to hold this title, following in the footsteps of Miss Peru Gladys Zender in 1957, Miss Colombia Luz Marina Zuluaga in 1958, and Miss Argentina Norma Nolan in 1962.

A Life in the Spotlight

Marta Vasconcellos had a fiancé at the time she participated in the Miss Brazil competition. Representing Brazil in the Miss Universe 1968 pageant, she competed against 64 contestants, including Miss Curacao Anna Maria Braafheid, who became the first black woman to become the first runner-up in the history of Miss Universe.

Returning to Family Life

After her victory and a year of work with the Miss Universe Organization, Vasconcellos returned to Brazil to be with her family and fiancé. She lived in New York City during her reign, but upon her return to Brazil in 1969, she got married.

A Private Life

Vasconcellos leads a quiet private life, away from the public eye. She had two children with her husband Reynaldo Lurero: Leonardo and Lilian. Additionally, she has adopted two children, Filipe and Guilherme. Marta occasionally visits Boston, Massachusetts, where she works in a Portuguese-speaking organization that helps victims whose rights have been violated.
